Youngsters at Wilvaken are busy doing what they like to do. Our program organization provides a great degree of individual freedom of choice, depending partly on the age group of the camper. We feel that youngsters are here on holiday, and should not be subject to a highly regimented routine as they usually are during their school year. This aspect of freedom is usually appreciated by both the campers and their families. It is our experience that campers quickly learn to exercise their autonomy with responsibility. Most children at Wilvaken for their first time learn within a couple of days how to choose their activities and participate in our program. Few children have difficulty in adapting to planning parts of their day as there is always staff nearby willing to help.
Wilvaken campers choose two instruction activities in a four day cycle. These two activities are normally the first two periods in the morning. Upon completion of those two activities, the campers either go to their language group or swim class or riding if they have signed up for those activities. If not then they may choose from our daily schedual another activity that will be listed there. So as an example, if they are super keen sailors, they can continue sailing till lunchtime. Canoe fanatics, on the other hand, can choose to work on their canoeing levels!
The afternoons are a little more free and except for campers signed up for riding, language and swimming, the others may choose to do other activities offered during the afternoon. This is a great time to practice what was learned in the morning. A daily program sheet is posted at the lodge.
The opportunity to pass levels in swimming, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing is available. A camper could do a level in 2 weeks if they concentrated on attaining the skill. Staff members are always there to encourage and work with the camper.
Afternoons may also be used by the cabin group to do an outing or by the camp as a whole to play a game together.

A one day break exists between the July and August sessions with no program available during this time. It is our expectation that any campers who are attending both "end of July" (J2) and "beginning of August" (A1) periods will use this time as a break from camp with their families.
This period is used for staff changeover and important mid-season meetings. Before camp, please discuss arrangements to care for international and out-of-province campers during the between-camps break with the Directors.
A few campers from out-of-province may remain at Wilvaken during this period if they have no local family or friends to visit. Some activities are planned for them, and they also have some quiet time.
